Police in Chinsali District of Muchinga province have arrested five armed robbers after they staged a mid-night robbery at Paul Mushindo University construction site around 00:47 hours yesterday.
Police have also recovered an AK 47 assault rifle and a shot gun from the robbers.
The five robbers were arrested barely 24 hours after staging a robbery following a man hunt mounted by police officers from Chinsali police station.
Muchinga Province Police Commissioner, Auxensio Daka, who confirmed the arrest, told the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali today that the robbers, who were armed with a shot gun, had a motive of stealing from the Chinese construction team engaged to construct Paul Mushindo University whom they suspected to have huge sums of money.
The bandits had also snatched an AK 47 assault rifle serial number 2417 without the 28 rounds of ammunitions magazine from officers who were guarding the site.
The two police officers who were attacked have been identified as number 44033, Constable Chilufya and Constable Mwandu officer number 44641 that were guarding the said institution.
The two officers were injured in the mid night attack as constable Mwandu sustaining two deep cuts in the head and a suspected fractured left hand while constable Chilufya sustained bruises on both hands.
Mr Daka identified the robbers as Shula Chanda, 38, a farmer of Kawama Village, Bernard Mwaba Kapolyo, aged 39, Osward Mutale, 26, of Seed Farms, Moses Chishimba, 28, a carpenter at Paul Mushindo University and Daniel Chimbala, 35, a teacher at Chinsali State Prisons School.
The Police Chief said the recovered shot gun that was used in the robbery and the stolen AK 47 assault rifle were found in the house of a police reserve officer number 5286, Reserve Inspector Daniel Chimbala, of Skills Compound in Chinsali during an initial investigation by police.
Mr Daka added that a Toyota Noah registration number ACL 7749, grey in colour, was used in staging the robbery which has since been recovered and impounded.
Mr Daka said this is the third time a robbery has been staged at the site hence attaching police officers to guard the premises.
The Police Commissioner added that the five suspected robbers are currently in police custody and will appear in court soon.
