CHINGOLA magistrate Shadreck Chanda has sentenced a jealous man of Chingola to three years imprisonment with hard labour for battering his wife after she greeted a man he suspected was her lover.
Mr Chanda convicted Richard Muya, 44, of Kasonka area in Chingola, on Wednesday, after finding him guilty of assault.
“I find you guilty and convict you accordingly. The Bible says the truth and only the truth shall set you free. You denied the charge, but in your heart, you knew that it was you who had beaten your wife. She even sustained a broken left arm.
“Women are suffering greatly at the hands of men especially, and we will not relent until all offenders face the law. You should learn to respect women. I have heard your mitigation, but I will punish you to deter would-be offenders. We want to curb this vice so as to address the plight of women,” Mr Chanda said in his judgment.
Particulars are that on July 26, this year, in Chingola, Muya assaulted Dorothy Matafwali after she greeted a man while they were coming from the market.
During trial, Ms Matafwali told the court that her husband, who could not wait to reach home to question her, started beating her on the way from the market.
She told the court that they were only two months in marriage, but her husband was jealous when she greeted other men.
In mitigation, the 44-year-old, who said he was a “double orphan”, prayed for maximum leniency.
“Your honour my family does not know that I have been arrested. And I have four children who will suffer if you send me to prison. Your honour, I am a double orphan. I am asking if there are other ways of punishing me than sending me to prison,” he pleaded.
