A 17-YEAR-OLD grade 11 pupil of Chipata Day Secondary School has been arrested for dumping a day-old baby into a pit latrine.
The infant died of suffocation.
Eastern Province commissioner of police Eugene Sibote, who confirmed the incident that happened in Chipata Motel area on September 19, said the pupil in question has been arrested and charged with infanticide.
“The girl was arrested two days later and was taken to Chipata General Hospital for medical attention because she was bleeding heavily,” he said.
Mr Sibote said the girl has not been taken to court yet because she is still receiving medical attention.
In a separate interview, Chipata Municipal Council chief fire officer Fackson Mbewe said the Fire Brigade found the infant dead when they rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call.
Mr Mbewe said they interrogated the named girl, who could not explain anything but instead broke down when they asked her why she dumped the baby in a pit latrine.
“When we rushed to the scene, we found a day-old lifeless baby wrapped in a black Chitenge material,” he said.
Mr Mbewe said preliminary investigations by the Fire Brigade established that the infant was dumped in a pit latrine three days before the body was retrieved.
A Daily Mail crew that rushed to the scene found curious on-lookers watching as Fire Brigade officers were trying to retrieve the infant’s body.
