Chronically ill prisoners to be released on medical grounds

Zambia Prisons Service Commissioner General Percy-Chato-has urged staff in prisons across the country to recommend any prisoner with chronicle illness for release to enable them seek medical attention outside correctional facilities.

 

Mr.Chato was speaking at Milima Central Prison in Kasama shortly before he released on compassionate grounds, Mike Simwanza who was serving a five year sentence.

 

Mr. Simwanza, 30, suffered a stroke while in prison and is now confined to a wheel chair.

 

Mr Chato explained that the case of Simwanza received necessary attention from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

 

The commissioner General has been on a tour of Northern and Luapula provinces to check on prison infrastructure and the welfare of officers as well as prisoners.
