—-Police in Shiwangándu district of Muchinga Province have arrested a 25-year-old woman for alleged infanticide.

Muchinga Province police Deputy Commissioner, Chilije Nyirenda, has confirmed the development in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali today.

Mr Nyirenda said the woman has also been charged with concealing the birth of her baby boy.

Mr Nyirenda explained that Priscilla Lunda, who is bar lady at one of the drinking places at Mutambo trading area, is alleged to have aborted her seven -month-old pregnancy on Tuesday this week and threw away the foetus in the nearby bush.

The deputy police chief said members of the public, who saw Priscilla pregnant, were surprised to notice that she was no longer looking pregnant, adding that Priscilla also failed to explain after being questioned to what had happened to her pregnancy.

The matter was reported to the police and Priscilla led the officers to Chandaula Village, about 5 km from Matumbo where a foetus, wrapped in a polythene sack, was picked.

The foetus was found lying on the ground, 400 metres away from Priscilla’s mother.

Police said a post-mortem has already been conducted on the foetus, adding that Priscilla, who is remanded at Nambuluma police station, has since been charged with infanticide and concealing the birth of her baby. She will appear in court soon.
