Sinjembela Member of Parliament Poniso Njeulu has urged the Ministry of Agriculture to urgently complete the construction of maize depots which are currently under construction in his constituency.
Mr. Njeulu, who is also Information and Broadcasting Service Deputy Minister, said Shangombo district has a lot of maize which should be stored in maize depots to prevent it from going to waste.
He also called on the Ministry of Agriculture to seriously monitor contractors that have been engaged to construct various maize depots in Shangombo and surrounding areas.
He said this when he toured various maize depots in his constituency.
Mr. Njeulu said government was committed to ensuring that crops, which the farmers will harvest this season, are well preserved and stored until the next farming season.
And Deputy Minister of Agriculture Greyford Monde assured Mr. Njeulu that his ministry will complete construction of all the unfinished maize storage depots in his constituency.
Mr. Monde has since warned that Government will take action against contractors who have been fully paid but have abandoned construction of maize storage depots.
He said Government will not tolerate contractors who have a bad attitude towards work.
He pointed out that the bad attitude towards work resulted in the wastage of maize in the previous farming season.
