BANDITS on Friday snatched over K100,000 from a Lusaka businessman in an incident that left one person with a bullet wound inflicted by a police officer who had fired at the robbers.
Hu Justine was robbed when he parked his Toyota Hilux behind Bank of China on Lusaka’s Kabelenga Road.
Mr Hu of Makeni had left the money in his vehicle and the robbers, who were apparently trailing him, gained access of the car and got K100,000 cash.
A police officer noticed the robbery and she fired “warning shots”, one of which hit a passer-by.
“One stray bullet hit a member of the public, Kelvin Nyirongo, aged 26, of plot number 33 Mpelembe Road of Kabwata, who was quickly rushed to the University Teaching Hospital and is currently admitted in GO1,” police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said yesterday.
Mr Hamoonga has appealed to the public with information on the robbery to alert the police.
A month ago, three masked bandits robbed another businessman of K200,000 and US$5,000 cash on Lusaka’s Addis Ababa Drive.
In another matter, police in Mansa on Friday arrested Peter Chilambwe, 28, of Chabale-mwi village for alleged human trafficking.
The police arrested Mr Chilambwe at UB Market in Mansa after he approached a businessman with an offer of his 20-year-old cousin Shadreck Mwewa in exchange for K15,000.
“Peter Chilambwe tricked the victim that he was going to get him a job at a shop and apparently the same businessman is the one who alerted the police over Chilambwe’s intentions,” Mr Hamoonga said.
Mr Hamoonga said the accused is in custody and will appear in court soon.
He has warned members of the public that human trafficking is a serious crime.
“I’m especially appealing to the youths in rural areas to be wary of such persons who pick them from settlements under the pretext that they will find them jobs in town,” Mr Hamoonga noted.
