A twenty one -year-old boy of Nanikeleko village in chief Nabutu of Mongu district in Western Province has died after being attacked by a Hippo in the Zambezi River while the other boy escaped unhurt.
The deceased met his fate on Saturday around 07:00hours when he was crossing the Zambezi River using a Canoe from Nanikelako to Kalamba forest to fetch firewood.
And Imanga Sifunganyambe, the uncle to the deceased has confirmed the incident to ZANIS in an interview in Mongu District today stating that the victim whom he has identified as Yauluka Kamwi 21 was attacked severely when the beast bounced and the canoe he was in capsized.
Mr. Sifunganyambe said that the uncle to the deceased, Kamwi Simasiku 22 was also in the Canoe during the attack adding that the survivor managed to swim off to the bank of the river uninjured adding that it was at that point when the mammal charged at the deceased and cut him to death.
The body of the deceased is not yet retrieved from the water, however, Police in collaboration with Zambia Wild Authority (ZAWA) Officers have since been deployed to the scene to assess the situation.
Effort to get comment from the Provincial Commissioner of Police proved futile by press time.
