Forest management enhances economic growth – Chikuba
Chipata, February 17, 2015, ZANIS……. Government says effective forest
resource management plays an important role in enhancing economic
growth and social wellbeing of the people through the reduction of
poverty.
Eastern Province Acting Permanent Secretary Beenzu Chikuba says
this is because through forestry management jobs are created in wood
processing, tree nursery establishment and other economic tourism.
Ms. Chikuba was speaking in Chipata today during the launch of the
provincial tree planting commemoration.
She disclosed that government through the forestry department has
planted over 66,200 seedlings of pine and eucalyptus trees in all the
tree plantations across the province.
She said trees also play a major role in the global carbon cycle
thereby mitigating climate change through increased resilience of the
ecosystems and landscapes.
And Chief Chanje of the Chewe speaking people of Chipata district has
pledged his continued support to programmes aimed at mitigating
deforestation in his chiefdom.
Chief Chanje said this is because trees play a vital role in safe
guarding the environment for the benefit of the people.
