Kawambwa cooperative unions in disarray

Kawambwa, January 26, 2015, ZANI—The District Cooperative Union in Kawambwa has expressed concern at the low number of cooperatives that are operating within the confines of the law.

The Cooperative Union in the district says most of the existing members are not working in line with cooperative Act.

Kawambwa District Cooperative Union chairperson Evaristo Kapasa made this observation in a statement
issued to ZANIS in Kawambwa today.

Mr Kapasa said it was that only 10 percent of the total number of cooperatives were working in line with the cooperative Act while 90 percent are still staggering.

He says unless extensive and intensive trainings are conducted in the
area more cooperatives will not gain knowledge and come up with
something tangible to ease their problems.

Mr Kapasa however explained that every member of the cooperative starting
from ordinary to the leadership level should be trained if they were to
be strengthened unlike what is obtaining on the ground.

He urged the government through the Ministry of Agriculture and
Livestock to immediately empower the District Cooperative
Unions countrywide through financial and material support.

Mr Kapasa noted that what the DCUs were generating at the moment is not
enough to manage the primary cooperative societies hence the need for
the government through the ministry of agriculture to intervene.
