Kasama, January 16th, 2015, ZANIS — THE meteorological department in Northern Province has predicted that three districts in the province may face floods this rainy season.
ZANIS reports that the Provincial Meteorological Officer Sylvester Hakalaki revealed the development during a provincial epidemic preparedness meeting held at the provincial planning unit conference Hall in Kasama today.
Mr. Hakalaki said that according to the forecast of the rainy pattern this season, some districts like Nsama, Mporokoso, Kaputa and the Chambeshi River Basin may have some pockets of flash floods.
He said the forecast was important because it allowed people in flood prone areas to adequately prepare themselves in case of floods.
Mr. Hakalaki added that the events may affect infrastructure like schools, bridges, peoples’ houses and was a danger to household food security.
He added that generally, most areas in the province will record normal rainfall this season.
Northern Province permanent secretary Hlobotha Nkunika – who chaired the meeting – directed district commissioners and the Disaster Management and Mitigations Unit (DMMU) to sensitize people in the affected areas and be on alert respectively.
