THE Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) has suspended 123 companies out of 1,400 for operating without a practising licence.
The EIZ Act number 17 of 2010 prohibits individuals, engineering professionals, firms and units from practising engineering without a practising licence issued by the institute.
The defaulting firms were practising engineering without this year’s practising certificate from the EIZ and have been served with enforcement notices.
EIZ registrar and chief executive officer Henry Mwale said at a media briefing yesterday that the decision to suspend the 123 firms was arrived at after all efforts as provided in the Act under enforcement procedures were followed.
Mr Mwale said despite EIZ issuing notices to the affected companies, they still failed to comply.
“The board has now given a further 14 days from yesterday to show cause, individually, why these firms should not have their registration with the board cancelled and thereafter, legal action shall be taken against them,” he said.
Mr Mwale said EIZ will soon publish the list of the suspended firms in the daily papers.
He, however, appealed to individual engineers, technologists, technicians and crafts persons that have not renewed their practising licences to do so before the end of next month.
“If they do not renew their licences before December 31, they too will face the same measures of having their registration with the board suspended and cancelled and further be liable to prosecution,” Mr Mwale said.
