Choma vendors to relocate to Shampande

——The Choma Municipal Council says it will soon 
 remove all street vendors in the provincial capital to restore sanity and order.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS today, Choma Municipal Council Public Relations Officer, Ramona Phiri, said the local authority will soon relocate all the street vendors to Shampande Market once rehabilitation works are completed.

Ms Phiri also explained that the council was waiting for applications from
traders who would be expected to move to the rehabilitated Shampande
market.

“I wish to state that we have plans to move all the street vendors who are trading in the corridors to Shampande market which is currently under rehabilitation once it is completed,” said Ms Phiri.

“Right now we are waiting for applications for trading space for all those expected to be relocated,” she added.

The removal of street vendors from the streets is one of the major thorny issues confronting many local authorities but Livingstone City Council is one example that successfully removed street vendors from corridors.

Ms Phiri pointed out that the council was determined to make the Provincial Capital as clean as possible in view of the looming rainy season and in keeping with the Keep Choma Clean Campaign.

And Ms Phiri said the council was impressed with the progress made on the construction of the 30 km urban roads by China Jiangsu Company.

She said the council was optimistic that the upgrading of the roads to bituminous standard would be done within the timeframe of 14 months.

The company started working on the roads three months ago and is expected to complete the project worth K126 million in the remaining 11 months.
