One Hundred and twenty seven Zambia students have been awarded Russian state scholarships to pursue higher professional education in various fields of education in that country.

The Russian government further plans to add between 55 and 60 more Russia state scholarships to Zambia in the range of programmes of higher professional education, peacekeeping training programmes, short term and long term programmes for officers and future specialists of the law enforcement agencies of Zambia.

This will bring the total number of state scholarships granted each year by Russia to 190, making Russian Federation the major investor in human capital for Zambia.

Speaking during the send-off ceremony for the students going to Russia today in Lusaka, Russian Ambassador to Zambia Konstatine Kozhanov said the increase in the number of scholarships for Zambia comes as a contribution to the commemoration of the independence anniversary and 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Ambassador Kozhanov said Russia, through scholarships to Zambia, contributes to the shaping of Zambian boys and girls and helps in the formation and upgrading of the most valuable Zambian resource.

And Chairman of the Bassaries Committee Nevelyn Wilombe expressed gratitude that the Russian government has continued to support Zambia through training of human resource by offering scholarships in key fields such as medicine, engineering, science, information technology and many other fields.

Professor Wilombe, who is also Deputy Minister of Education, stated that the awarding of 127 scholarships to Zambia is a sign of the blossoming relations that the two countries have enjoyed over the past 50 years.

He described the relations as exemplary because of the importance of the scholarships to the country’s development.

Prof. Wilombe stressed that the newly qualified Zambians will upon return from Russia contribute significant to the development of their country.

He said this in a speech read for him by Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) Director General David Chakonta.

The students have since been given their travel documents and received orientation in language and culture prior to their travel.
