PRESIDENT Michael Sata has called for more support from all partners in the implementation of peace and security in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Great Lakes Region.
Mr Sata said here yesterday that although the restoration of peace initiatives had reached implementation stage, more effort was needed to completely weed conflict in the region.
The Zambian Head of State said this in a speech delivered at the Fourth Regional Oversight Mechanism on the margins of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
“Zambia notes with satisfaction the significant progress made by the technical support committee so far,” Mr Sata said.
“I can only appeal that we support this comprehensive approach to resolving the problem of insecurity in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the region.”
Mr Sata said the plan of action was maturing and commended partners who had worked tirelessly in restoring peace in the Great Lakes Region.
The Regional Oversight Mechanism is meant to enhance peace, security and cooperation in DRC and the Great Lakes Region, which has experienced ethnic and other forms of conflict.
Leaders came up with the mechanism as an effective tool to help restore peace through collective effort.
