Former KTZ workers ‘ benefits still pending
Kafue, March 20, 2013,ZANIS————Former Kafue Textiles of Zambia
(KTZ) workers have appealed to government to intervene in their
claim for 50 percent of their terminal benefits which have not been paid for the
past eight years.
This is according to a letter addressed to the Vice President Dr Guy Scot dated
16 March 2013 and signed by former Union Chairman for KTZ workers
Wilmore Buumba and Wellington Mwape and made available to ZANIS in
Kafue today.
The former KTZ workers are appealing to government to
help them get their remaining 50 percent terminal benefits and other service
bonuses which were not paid by the previous government.
The former KTZ workers stated that they were forced to accept the 50 percent
terminal benefits by the previous government because the state threatened to
give the money to Maamba collieries if they had refused to sign the memorandum of understanding.
The former KTZ workers claimed that former President Rupiah Banda duped
them when he announced during a campaign rally at Matanda
Stadium in Kafue that government through the Ministry of
Finance was preparing retirement packages for former KTZ workers.
And former KTZ workers spokesperson Borniface Mhango wondered how
former President Rupiah Banda went to South Africa to complain to the
Commonwealth over his alleged violation of human rights when he too
did the same to the KTZ retirees by forcing them to sign the memorandum
of understanding .
Mr. Mhango accused Mr Banda and other opposition political party
leaders of having supported the MMD when it was violating people’s
rights through selling of companies to investors.
