—-Zambia Institute of Environmental Management (ZIEM) has stiffer penalty for abrogating environmental laws to ensure that the laws are respected by mining firms in Zambia
ZIEMA Chief Executive Officer, Morgan Kakati, says current environmental laws are not critical especially on licensed mining firm who emit pollutants beyond permitted levels.
Speaking in a telephone interview with ZANIS today, Mr Kakati called on environmental bodies to build a consensus on the laws that are not observed by the mining firms.
He noted that it is vital for environmental bodies to have adequate trained staff to inspect mining firms in Zambia in order to make those involved in the degradation of the environment accountable.
Mr Kakati has appeled to the relevant authorities see to it that they look at the plight of the Zambia environmental monitoring bodies which are not funded adequately.
He has noted that as the mining firms continue to bring revenue to that Zambian economy, they also have to respect the environment within which they operate.
Mr Kakati has since expressed happiness at the acknowledgment of the Auditor General’s report on the continued abrogating of the laws by the mining firms.
His sentiments come after the reflection in the Auditor General’s report that the mining firms in Zambia continue to abrogate environmental laws.
