Mansa farmers worried of Lwingishi bridge

Mansa, Mar 4, 2013/ZANIS———-Over 300 farmers in sub chief Songa’s area in Mansa district have expressed concern on the state of the bridge across Lwingishi stream on the Mansa-Songa road.

The farmers are worried that the bridge, which has remained unattended to for a long, is on the verge of collapsing.

Speaking on behalf of other farmers, Peter Chishala said the state of the bridge across Lwingishi River is posing a danger to human life and hampering economic activities in the area.

Mr Chishala observed that the state of the bridge in the area has made it difficult for farmers who had to carry their farming inputs on bicycles during this year’s input distribution exercise

ZANIS reports that Mr Chishala, who described the state of bridge as a disaster in waiting, feared that with the coming of the marketing season, farmers will be unable to transport their produces if nothing is done.

He has since appealed to government through the office of the Provincial Disaster Management and Mitigation Unity to quickly work on the bridge, saying the Mansa-Songa road is the only route that connects Songa to the rest of the district.

And when contacted for a comment, Luapula Province Disaster Management and Mitigation Unity Coordinator, Mwetwa Hambayi, said his office has not yet been availed with the information on the bridge.
