—–The Police Public Complaint Authority (PPCA) says it wants to promote a professional police service which every citizen will be proud of.
PPCA Chairperson, James Mwanakatwe, says a professional police body can play a key role in promoting foreign investment and fostering national development.
He notes that with a compromised police, investors will be shunning to invest in the country due to fears of instability, stating that a professional police service also creates a conducive environment for
people to conduct business thereby promoting development.
He adds that police plays a critical role in promoting good governance in a democratic society and it is for this reason PPCA was formed to check the way police officers operate.
Mr Mwanakatwe said this when he held sensitization meetings with both government officials and the public in the Kaputa Council Chamber yesterday.
He said the authority has embarked on sensitization programs around the country to sensitize people on their role and help resolve the conflicts between police and the public.
And PPCA Vice Chairperson, Emmanuel Chileshe, said the Patriotic Front (PF) government has shown good intentions to allow the police work professionally through empowering the authority.
Mr Chileshe noted that although the authority came into operation in 2002 it never performed according to expectation due to lack of funding by the previous government.
He also reiterated the call to have a professional police service, adding that the authority wants this to be achieved within five years.
Earlier, Kaputa District Commissioner, Chrispine Kachusha, said there was need for the authority to extend the meeting from just meeting Heads of Departments to various people to get their complaints.
Mr Kachusha said a lot of people have complaints against the police, adding that meeting them could provide solutions to the problem.
And the general public, who were later invited to attend the meeting, asked the authority to address issues of human rights abuse, to non-payment of benefits to families of deceased police officers.
