A DRIVER died on the spot, while 14 others sustained serious injuries when the bus they boarded went off the road after its rear tyre came off in Serenje District.
In another development, a 37-year-old driver with Rural Roads Unit (RRU), who died on Sunday night after he suffocated at a camp, where the RRU is working on the Ngabwe –Kabwe roads has been buried.
The Serenje accident happened around 04:30 hours on Tuesday, when the driver of the CV Scania bus registration number ALL 8184 identified as Chrispin Mulengeshi lost control and went off the road.
Central Province Police chief Standwell Lungu explained that the driver had his leg and hand cut off, while a Tanzanian, Zachariah Mwakawaga had his left hand cut off.
Mr Lungu said another passenger of Kabwe’s Ngungu Township Laski Ponde sustained a disfigured left leg, while 12 other passengers were nursing body injuries at Serenje District Hospital .
Mr Mwakawaga and Mr Ponde have since been transferred to Kabwe General Hospital for specialised treatment.
And the RRU driver Salati Chulu, who died on Sunday at a camp along Kabwe-Ngabwe road this week was buried in Kabwe yesterday and is survived by a wife and three children.
Speaking at the burial, Central Province Permanent Secretary Edwidge Mutale described the death of Mr Chulu as a big blow considering that he was one of the people who were reliable, while working on the Ngabwe-Kabwe road currently under construction.
