LUSAKA, June 26 (Xinhua) — Seven people were killed and another nine injured when a bus they were traveling hit into a stationary truck in northwestern Zambia’s Solwezi district, the police said on Thursday.
Zambia Police Spokesperson Charity Munganga-Chanda told Xinhua that the accident occurred on Wednesday around 8:00 p.m when the driver of the bus lost control and hit into a truck.
Among the dead were two women and seven men while two of those injured are still admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital and are in a critical condition.
“The driver of the bus has since been charged with causing seven deaths by careless driving and will appear in court soon,” she said.
The bus was carrying 21 passengers, with five of them escaping unhurt.
Road traffic accidents involving public buses are common in Zambia and are mainly caused by careless driving.
According to the country’s Road Transport and Safety Agency, the country records an average 1, 200 fatalities from road traffic accidents each year.
