Tourists taking photographs of rhinos and elephants on smartphones then posting them on social networks are inadvertently helping poachers track the animals.
Some phones “geo-tag” photographs that give the exact time and GPS coordinates at which the image was taken.
When an unwitting tourist posts the picture on publicly accessible social media networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Tumblr, opportunistic poachers can quickly find the location of such an animal.
