National Arts Council (NAC) Chairperson Mulenga Kapwepwe says she is still in charge and has vowed not to vacant from Office.
Ms. Kapwepwe dismissed media reports that she has overstayed as Chairperson and contends that she is delivering to the aspirations of the musicians.
She was speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today.
“Thats their opinion but l am still in charge of NAC. I have stayed less than 14 years so their facts are wrong and misplaced,” Ms. Kapwepwe said.
The musicians allege that Ms. Kapwepwe has not protected the music industry and that she had overstayed in that position as Chairperson.
They accused Ms. Kapwepwe of failing to improve the welfare of the artistes adding that they have not seen any change in the 14 year period.
Recently, a group of artistes from various disciplines among them Jordan Katembula alias JK, Mundia Mukubesa (Petersen), Wesley Chibambo popularly known as Dandy Crazy launched a campaign to remove Ms. Kapwepwe from her office.
The artistes led by singer Saboi Imboela registered their displeasure and wrote a petition to former Tourism and Arts minister Sylvia Masebo demanding the immediate removal of Ms. Kapwepwe but the was no avail.
Calls for the chairpersons’ resignation have come after the second successful hosting of the Zambian Breweries Plc, Mosi Lager brand sponsored Zambian Music Awards (ZAMA).
Musicians as well as some fans had attacked the awards for being biased while others cried foul over the money that is given to winners.
NAC just like the National Sports Council of Zambia is mandated to look into the affairs of the arts.
