The Mkushi Magistrate Court has sentenced 18 people to a month’s imprisonment for their role played in last week’s riots in Itala Compound area.
In passing the Sentence, Magistrate Ackson Mumba stated that the 18 rioters had been sentenced to serve 30 days imprisonment for jointly acting together to cause the breach of peace.
Magistrate Mumba said that the accused persons had acted contrary to section 178 sub section f of the Penal Code, as well as Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
He said that for their involvement in the riot, the accused persons were found guilty to one Count of the offence related to Idle and Disorderly Conduct.
The 18 are Joseph Simbeye, Obster Kabwe, Frazier Kabwe, Matthews Simukonda, Humphrey Lyumbo, Abuit Kabamba, Gift Ngosa, Musenge Zemba and Rozariah Mulenga.
Others are Julius Sinyinza, Justin Mulaya, Evans Sikazwe, Gershom Kalunga, Samson Silungwe, Bwalya Chibale, Judith Siamenzo, Peter Musonda and Gift Changwe.
Few days ago, angry mobs of residents looted some shops and damaged some property in Itala Compound and New Market areas, prompting intervention from the local Police Officers.
The heavily outnumbered Police Officers had fired teargas canisters as they battled with the rioters in a confrontation that had lasted for 3 hours, leading to the arrest of 18 suspects.
