Sinazongwe20th February, 2014 – Government has called for effective implementation of the sustainable operation and maintenance project for rural water supply in Sinazongwe District,
SINAZONGWE District Commissioner Dodo Sindaza says this is in order to enhance provision of clean and safe drinking water to communities.
Mr.Sindaza said sustainable operation and maintenance project for rural water supply (SOMAP) which is under the Ministry of Local Government and Housing and supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) could only produce tangible results over improvement of water and sanitation in the District if only managed effectively and implemented efficiently.
The District Commissioner was speaking in Nkandabwe ward of Sinazongwe District , yesterday.
This was when he officially commissioned a SOMAP shop which Government had constructed with support from DANIDA for easy accessibility to spare parts for communities at a subsidized cost.
Mr.Sindaza said this was to allow the operation and maintenance of hand pumps in Sinazongwe District in order to improve on the provision of clean and safe drinking water to the people.
He said that SOMAP was established to provide a bulk of spare parts as the seed stock to start the revolving system for sustainable supply chain while relevant stakeholders including area pump menders (APM) at different levels were sensitized and trained.
Mr.Sindaza said that hand pumps in rural areas of Sinazongwe District were playing a cardinal role in the provision of clean and safe drinking water to communities and therefore needed to be managed and maintained properly.
He challenged all beneficiaries such as the ward development committees (WDCs), V-WASHE, APMs and the community at large to play an active role in the management and maintenance of the shop by contributing user fees for operation and maintenance of hand pumps.
Mr.Sindaza disclosed that materials had already been procured stocked in the SOMAP shop for beneficiaries to start procuring in order to continue the operation and maintenance of hand pumps.
He added it remained the responsibility of the Council, Community and all other stakeholders to strategize how best the SOMAP spare part shop.
