Government eager to improve education

Solwezi, January 29, ZANIS——Solwezi District Commissioner, Crispin Likando says government is determined to improve the quality of education being delivered in the country.

Mr Likando cited the abolition of basic schools and re-introduction of primary and secondary schools as well as the introduction of local languages as a medium of instruction as some of the measures government is putting in place to improve education.

He said government stands ready to support and embrace initiatives that are aimed at contributing to the improvement of education.

Mr Likando was speaking in Solwezi today at the Kansanshi book handover ceremony of 200 text books to 12 schools that participated in the spelling bee competition late last year.

He commended Kansanshi mine for partnering with government in making Solwezi a better place for learning.

Speaking at the same function Kansanshi mine Public Relations Manager, Godfrey Msiska said as part of its corporate social responsibility, the mine will continue to partner with all stakeholders in a quest to improve education delivery.

The spelling bee competition is an initiative of Kansanshi mine that is aimed at enhancing the vocabulary of learners, give them an understanding of the English language and also help improve writing and presentation skills.

The competition saw 12 schools receiving text books worth K9,180 and participants walking away with cash prizes totalling K 7,400.

The schools included Solwezi Technical, Solwezi Day and Mutanda secondary schools.

Others were Mitukutuku, Kyabankaka, Kimiteto, Kapijimpanga, Kifubwa, Beliya, Solwezi, Mwajimambwe and Rodwell Mwepu primary schools.
