Authorities at Kalengwa Primary school in Mufumbwe district of North Western Province have called on government to provide the institution with teachers’ accommodation and learning tools.

Deputy Head Teacher, Charles Mankishi, in an interview with ZANIS in Mufumbwe said the school faces a lot of challenges particularly accommodation for teachers and lack of books.

Mr Mankishi said the school was, however, doing its best to provide quality education despite the challenges.

“As it stands the school has no staff houses and teachers have to come from very far. This makes it difficult for them to operate effectively,” he said.

“Also, we do not have enough books especially the upper basic, in most study areas teachers use the teachers’ guidance books which mostly are bought by teachers themselves,” Mr Mankishi complained.

The deputy head teacher further called on government to provide electricity at the school, saying this will improve the learning standards for the pupils.

Mr Mankishi explained that the school needed power to effectively implement the new curriculum which encourages learning with computers.

“We need electricity here. Government can even consider providing us with a solar panel as we await the district to be connected to the national grid,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kalengwa area councillor, Kalubi Kangombe, called on Kalengwa Mine to consider installing electricity at the school under its social responsibility programme.

Councillor Kangombe, however, commended the investor for having installed electricity at the Kalengwa clinic, adding that the move should be extended to the school and market in the area.

Kalengwa Primary school is located about 42 kilometres south-west of Mufumbwe district.
