President Michael Sata has announced that government is this year intending to commence the construction of three university colleges in Eastern, Northwestern and Western Provinces.
The President revealed that according to the budget allocations for the Ministry of Education, K404.3 million is meant for the construction of tertiary institutions of learning.
He said of this amount, K250 million was meant to kick-start the construction of student hostels at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and the Copperbelt University (CBU).
Mr. Sata disclosed on his facebook page that the three university colleges were the University College of Mathematics and Sciences in Nalolo district in Western Province, University College of Applied Arts in Katete district of Eastern Province and the University College of Technology in Northwestern Province.
The head of state said the construction of the universities was a major achievement for the country.
He further said once completed, the university colleges will broaden opportunities of access to university education and help decongest UNZA and CBU.
He emphasized that it was government’s intention to build a university in every province.
“It should be noted that our government’s aim is to build a university in each province,” Mr. Sata said.
Meanwhile, the President has said that during the year 2013, the Chalimbana National In-Service Teacher’s College, Kwame Nkrumah College of Education and Copperbelt College of Education were transformed into universities.
He also added that construction works will continue at Kwame Nkrumah and Mukuba universities as well as Chalimbana university.
The President also said that the construction of the Robert Kapasa Makasa University for Science and Technology in Chinsali has entered phase two and will continue, while the construction of the Palabana University for Livestock Sciences which started in 2013 was at phase one level and will continue.
Mr. Sata further said the construction works for the Paul Mushindo University have commenced and were at phase one of construction.
Mr. Sata further said government has begun the procurement processes to engage contractors to design and build King Lewanika University at Namushakende in Western Province and Luapula University in Mansa.
He said works on the two projects are expected to commence this year.
