——The Legal Enforcement Team on Sanitation has with immediate effect closed the Chadiza slaughter slab due to poor sanitation.

The team, which is comprised of Environmental Health Technologists that visited the slaughter slab this morning, recommended for the closure because there is no running   proper drainage for waste disposal.

Environmental Health Technologist, Bernard Khoza, said that the Ministry of Health did some inspection on the slab some two weeks ago and recommended to the council to clean the slab within seven days but that nothing has been done up to date.

And a ZANIS reporter who visited the slaughter slab this morning found more than ten dogs feeding on some carcass that was left at the slab while some animal waste was also heaping in a corner as it has not been cleaned for a long time.

The check also revealed that the drainage system was blocked and there was tall grass surrounding the premises.

And Chadiza District Commissioner, Paul Phiri, has taken a swipe at the local authority for failing to provide the necessary services that are needed to the community.

Mr Phiri said the council just rushed to collect revenue from the traders when in real sense they were failing to provide services to the people.

He expressed worry that if the situation remained as it was there could be an outbreak of diseases in the district.

The District Commissioner has since directed all butchers that use the slaughter slab in the district to stop paying revenue until the council cleans the slaughter slab and provides running water at the premises.

Mr Phiri said there was no way the council could be collecting revenue from people when in the actual sense it was failing to provide the necessary services.

And a number of residents have complained about the attitude of the local authority towards the provision of services, adding that the council had even failed to provide a toilet at the market place, forcing traders to be answering the call of nature in nearby bushes.

But Chadiza District Council Acting Director of Works, Fidelis Chitambala, said the council had assigned four workers to be cleaning the slaughter slab but wondered as to what might have happened for them to stop working at the site.
