The Private Sector Development Association (PSDA) has called on government to convene a mini indaba for relevant stakeholders in order to evaluate the country’ preparedness for hosting the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly.
The UNWTO, which will be held in August this year, will be co-hosted by Zambia and Zimbabwe.
PSDA chairperson Yusuf Dodia said it was important that major stakeholders in the conference come together and discuss issues concerning the hosting of the event.
Mr. Dodia said the indaba, which he said should be held in March this year, should ensure that the conference succeeds.
He told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that the UNWTO conference requires proper planning and preparations hence the need for relevant stakeholders to meet before the event takes place.
He said the mini indaba should strategise so that the country can reap full benefits from hosting the event.
Mr. Dodia said there was little time remaining before the conference is held hence it was imperative that preparations ahead of the general assembly are intensified.
He said on the part of his association, everyone was on the ground working out modalities to ensure that the private sector does not miss out on opportunities that will be available during the conference.
Mr. Dodia said this was one opportunity that should not be missed to sell Zambia’s economic and tourism potential to the outside world.
The PSDA chairperson also hailed the establishment of tourism committees in Western province.
The Western province committees were set up to unveil the country’s tourism potential in the region.
He said similar tourism committees should be established in Luapula province and other parts of the country if Zambia was to fully showcase its tourism potential.
Mr. Dodia also urged government to hasten the issuance of licences to the private sector to avoid any disturbances once the conference begins.
