Traditional leader supports AIDS fight
Isoka, December 5,2013, ZANIS…Chief Katyetye of the Tambo speaking
people in Isoka sistrict has implored his subjects to embrace the
calls to use contraceptives for birth control.
Speaking during the commemorations of this year’s world AIDS day
held at Kampumbu, the traditional leader said family
planning is vital as it is a yardstick to measure how one can manage
to keep their children healthy.
He added that with the advent of HIV /AIDS, contraceptives such condoms
play a key role in preventing sexually transmitted diseases.
And a health expert at Isoka district hospital Kelvin Mwanja said
World AIDS day was important to commemorate as it helps in
highlighting strides made in expanding HIV/AIDS services to
reduce new infections.
Mr. Mwanja said it was time for all stake holders to combine
efforts in information dissemination so that Zambia can rapidly
get to zero new infections, zero death, Zero stigma and
discrimination.
Meanwhile, a civic leader Davys Simbule who is also Isoka council
Chairman has urged young people to ensure that they empower
themselves with knowledge to prevent the transmission of the virus.
Councillor Simbule said one third of the total HIV incidences occur
in the young people aged 12 to 24 years.
He explained that youths are at a higher risk of infection because of factors
such as having multiple concurrent partners, low and inconsistent condom
use and low levels of male circumcision among others.
