The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has appealed to the Patriotic Front (PF) leadership to immediately put an end to the intra-party violence which has now become a source of concern to the nation.

Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka today, ZCTU President, Leonard Hikaumba, says the violence involving rival cadres in the ruling PF has the potential to divide the nation and could adversely affect development if left to spiral out of control.

Mr. Hikaumba says the PF hierarchy should show leadership and institute measures that will stop the violence once and for all.

He states that merely issuing statements condemning the violent clashes by top leadership without taking appropriate action is not inspiring because pockets of violence keep recurring and is now sending fear among citizens.

The ZCTU President has also called for dialogue in the PF party so that differences can be resolved at a round table instead of spilling blood and taking each other’s lives.

Mr. Hikaumba says the PF should learn to better manage their internal problems in a mature and democratic manner without endangering other people’s lives.

He has since appealed to President Michael Sata to use his powers to put an immediate end the barbarism because it is a great threat to democracy, the rule of law and national development.
