Luano District Commissioner Luke Mwamba said the maize was soaked after the roof of a classroom where the commodity was being kept was blown off by heavy winds.
In an interview from Luano yesterday, Mr Mwamba said he was saddened with the calamitous incident that happened at Chingombe school.
He said the incident happened after the roof of a newly-built one-by-two classroom block in which the maize was stored was blown-off by strong winds.
Mr Mwamba advised that the maize be immediately distributed to the intended beneficiaries to avoid it completely going to waste.
“The entire roof of the school was ripped off by the strong winds which was followed by heavy rain which soaked the whole consignment of relief maize, “he said.
He said the District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) and his office would soon conduct an assessment of the destruction to the school before submitting to the relevant Government departments towards rehabilitating it.
Meanwhile, distribution of relief food, which started on Tuesday this week by Zambia Air force (ZAF) helicopters to three areas of Luano valley, has been successfully completed.
Mr Mwamba said 700 by 50kilogramme bags of relief maize had since been delivered to Ching’ombe, Mbosha and Chembe in the Luano valley.
Out of the 700 bags of maize, Ching’ombe received 300 by 50kilogramme bags, Mbosha received 200, while Chembe got 200.
He paid tribute to the Government for giving the people of Luano valley relief maize considering that the area faced severe hunger.
The area is facing starvation because they had not been cultivating for the past seven years due to the presence of the gunned down three notorious Mailoni brothers who terrorised the area.
