Zambia has welcomed its first-ever optometry graduates, who have qualified from the Chainama College of Health Sciences.
Launched in 2010, the nine students’ graduation marks the successful delivery of Zambia’s three-year optometry technology diploma, which was developed and supported by Vision Aid Overseas.
Funded by Specsavers, the charity provided the College with an optometry training centre, qualified optometry teaching staff and equipment.
As part of its ongoing fundraising for the charity, Specsavers has donated over £300,000 to the Zambian cause. The multiple is currently working in partnership with VAO and the Zambian Ministry of Health to fund vision centres in nine of the country’s provinces by 2014. Seven of these have already been opened within main referral hospitals and have helped test an estimated 13,000 patients, and provided 9,000 people with spectacles.
The fully-qualified optometry technologists have all gained employment in Ministry of Health institutions across Zambia.
The graduates include, Moses Justin Banda, Paul Nenani Banda, Hope Nkandu Chisala, Jane Tangu Jere, Douglas Kabolwe, Nawa Mapulanga, Racheal Mshanga, Lucy Nkandu Nshimbi and Abel Sakala.
