Church beats worshipper over defilement
By NKOMBO KACHEMBA
MEMBERS of the Christ Embassy Church in Kitwe’s Wusakile on Sunday beat up a 41-year-old fellow worshipper for allegedly defiling a three-year-old girl while they were worshipping.
The church members alerted police who apprehended the suspect and took him to Kitwe Central Police station.
Copperbelt commissioner of police Mary Tembo confirmed the incident. She said the suspect, who has been arrested, has been identified as Kennedy Chanda of House No. E4-18 Wusakile in Kitwe.
Mrs Tembo said the child was attending Sunday school lessons outside the church when the incident happened.
Helen Banda, a church member, said the man of Wusakile in Kitwe lured the girl into one of the empty rooms at the church and defiled her while her mother was attending prayers.
She said the worshippers apprehended the man when he attempted to run away.
Ms Banda said when the girl’s mother walked out of the church around 12:00 hours, she found her daughter crying outside.
She said the girl told her mother that a man had taken her into a room and the mother confirmed that her daughter had been defiled after examining her.
“We are deeply disappointed with the man for sexually abusing a child while we were worshipping in church. He is our church member and we are really saddened by the incident,” Ms Banda said.
