Lands, Natural Resources and
Environmental Protection deputy Minister Danny Chingimbu says the
removal of fuel and maize subsidies will enable government re-channel
the money saved towards the protection of vulnerable groups.
Mr Chingimbu said that government removed the fuel and maize subsidies in
order to equitably spread national resources to all Zambians majority
of whom are the poor living below the poverty line in rural areas.
Mr Chingimbu said this when he was addressed residents at Sikufele and
Kanaji-Chilanda primary schools in Manyinga and Kabompo districts
respectively.
Mr. Chingimbu explained that according to the current living
conditions monitoring survey, 60.5 percent of Zambia’s population
lives below the poverty line.
He said majority of people owning vehicles and consuming more fuel are
in urban areas but that many rural people do not own cars
and thereby do not benefit from fuel subsidies.
Mr Chingimbu further explained that the Patriotic Front (PF)
administration is a pro-poor government that wants to see living
standards of the poor improved.
He said the removal of fuel and maize subsidies will enable government
re-channel the money towards education, health, general infrastructure
and community amenities such as water and sanitation.
He further said that the PF government wants to allocate more funds to
social protection, hospitals, provision of drugs and other medical supplies.
