Lundazi farmers challenged to diversify

–Lundazi District Commissioner, Janet Mvula, has challenged farmers in the district to embark on diversification and conservation farming, if they are to overcome the negative effects of draught due to climate change.

Ms Mvula observed that crop diversification and conversation type of farming is ideal because it enables farmers grow different types of crops which can survive draught and give farmers enough income.

The District Commissioner was speaking when she opened Mwase Block Agricultural and Commercial Show, whose theme was ’’BUSINES IN CHANGING ENVIRONMENT’’, held in senior
chief Mwase’s chiefdom over the weekend.

Ms Mvula said the main thrust of government policy on agriculture is to increase agricultural production with emphasis on diversification in crop and livestock production in order to attain household and national food security and subsequently improve incomes.

And speaking earlier, Mwase Agricultural Show chairperson, White Nkhata, complained to Ms Mvula that the chiefdom experienced low rainfall, hence poor crop yield, and appealed for more relief maize from government.
