Ndola, Zambia – The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) regrets to announce the cancellation of passenger train operations on the Zambian side until further notice.
The move has been necessitated by an illegal work stoppage, which has been declared by unionized employees who are demanding for the immediate adjustment of the salary dollar-exchange (parity) rate.
However, the work stoppage and suspension of operations is on the Zambian side only and does not affect Tanzania where passenger trains are running normally between Dar es Salaam and Mbeya.
In the meantime, the Management of TAZARA has engaged the two workers’ unions, the Workers Union of TAZARA in Zambia (WUTAZ) and the Crews and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CRAWUZ), to ensure that the impasse is resolved at the earliest.
The illegal work stoppage is regretted because it comes at a time when the Authority is beginning to win back the full confidence of its customers after several years of operational instability.
The striking employees have been urged to return to work and exercise patience while a solution to the matter is being sought.
