Monze District Medical Officer Dr Cephas Sialubanje says the second phase of Trachoma Mass Drug Administration (MDA) which was suspended due to cholera outbreak in the District would commence from 30th May to 3rd June, 2016.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS today, Dr Sialubanje said the MDA which is being financially supported by Sight savers International at cost of more than K400,000 would begin next week once the training of health staff and other stakeholders is completed.
Dr Sialubanje also said his office was waiting for other logistics such as transport, drugs among others from the partner (Sight savers) for the campaign expected to target the entire population of more than 200,000 people to be rolled out in the District.
“I would say that we are prepared to kick start the MDA campaign next week when we finish training community health workers , volunteers and receive other logistics from Sight savers International,” said Dr Sialubanje.
The MDA in Monze District was initially scheduled for the first week of May but was suspended due to the cholera outbreak which has since been contained by health authorities.
According to Health Authorities, the prevalence rate of Trachoma in Monze District stands at 46 per cent.
Trachoma is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis that cause roughening of the inner surface of the eye lids and if left untreated can led to permanent blindness.
Meanwhile, Dr Sialubanje appealed to all Monze residents to receive the free Trachoma drugs saying it was a potent preventive measure against the disease which causes blindness.
“We all need to take the Trachoma drugs because this is the only potent way we can not only protect ourselves but also protect others against the disease,” Dr Sialubnaje said.
