NEW Labour Party president Fresher Siwale has appeared in the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court on a charge of defaming President Edgar Lungu.

Siwale, 57, of Chelstone, is alleged to have on April 22, 2018 in Lusaka with intent to bring the name of the President into ridicule published defamatory matter by word of mouth to which he said ‘The President of the Republic of Zambia is not the actual Edgar Chagwa Lungu but Jonathan Mutawale, he must be arrested for having three National Registration Cards, he is an identity thief.’

Principal resident magistrate David Simusamba allocated the case to magistrate Alice Walusiku.
And when Siwale was presented before court, he was informed that the docket was not there so he could not take plea.

The State sought an adjournment to tomorrow.

Siwale applied for bail but the court told him that he could not be granted bail before taking plea.

The opposition leader has been in detention since Tuesday last week.
