Chain Stores in Ndola have complied with government’s directive to withdraw all ready to eat processed meat products from South Africa following an outbreak of listeriosis in that country.
A check around Ndola city in the affected shops revealed that all ready to eat processed meat products from South Africa had been removed from the shelves.
And the Ndola City Council has commended retail chain stores in Ndola for withdrawing ready to eat processed meat products from the shelves.
Ndola City Council Public Relations Manager Tilyenji Mwanza has told Phoenix News that most of the cold meat products currently on the shelves in most chain stores are locally produced and has explained that a team of public health inspectors are on ground carrying out routine inspections.
The Zambian government has banned the importation of ready to eat meat products from South Africa with immediate effect following an outbreak of listeriosis in that country with 948 cases reported and 180 deaths recorded since the first case was reported on 1st January, 2017.
