Southern province minister Edify Hamukale has disclosed that Government is in the process of identifying land for the construction of an airport in Choma.
Dr. Hamukale has since appealed to Ministry of Defence to consider establishing a Zambia Air Force base near the airport to help provide air security.
He has further called on the Ministry of Defence to establish a marine unit at Lake Kariba to help maintain security and preserve fish species.
The southern province Minister said this when Minister of Defence Davies Chama paid a courtesy call on him in Choma, Southern province.
Mr. Chama is in the area to familiarise himself with military cantonments in the province.
And responding to the appeals by Dr. Hamukale, Mr. Chama said his officers are already on the ground working with national parks to preserve animals, while the president has authorised him to deploy 48 marine units at Lake Kariba.
He also said once the airport project is actualised, ZAF personnel will be made available in Choma.
