This afternoon we held a press briefing at our head office in Lusaka.

During the briefing, we appealed to the international community to pay particular attention to our country’s deteriorating democratic standards, notably relating to press freedom and the rights and freedoms of opposition leaders and supporters.

As our country’s peace is threatened we are calling for the African Union, COMESA and Zambia’s partners across the globe to engage with us to secure solutions.

Zambia has been known as a haven of peace and a flag bearer for democracy, this is now under threat by those in office seeking absolute control by any means.

For us in the UPND, we respect the rule of law and the constitution and as such we have placed our confidence in the Constitutional Court.

What our country needs now as a matter of urgent priority are strong institutions through which we can defend and promote rights for all, and that will stop those in power violating the rules when it does not suit them.

We continue to appeal for peace and calm as the courts do their important work. This afternoon we held a press briefing at our head office in Lusaka.
