Arising from the illegal convention which was held by a group of expelled people from MMD, a false impression has been created that there has been a leadership change in the MMD.
MMD scheduled Convention is to take place in May 2017 at the expiry of the current President Nevers Mumba’s five year mandate. There has therefore been no legitimate convention held by the MMD as being reported in some sections of the Media. The purported MMD Convention which took place on 20th June 2016 was organized by non- members of MMD and does not have the mandate of the 65-man National Executive Committee of the party. There has never been any resolution by the NEC to hold a Convention this year.
There is also a false perception that MMD membership has gone with the illegal leadership of Felix Mutati. The balance of power lies in the hands of the legitimately elected President, Nevers Mumba. During the purported convention, only three out of ten Provincial Chairmen were lured to attend the said convention, seven have remained committed to the legitimate leadership of Dr Nevers Mumba. Of the 55 members of the NEC, only five attended the purported convention, leaving fifty in solidarity with Dr Mumba’s legitimate NEC.
These numbers represent close to 85% of the general membership supporting the legal MMD and its democratically elected President Nevers Mumba. There is also a strong correlation between the current balance of support in the current MMD and the result of the last 2012 Convention in which President Mumba was elected by a majority of 70% of the vote. Felix Mutati only garnered 30%. This status quo seems to still be the case in the MMD’s balance of power.
We further wish to confirm that the act by the illegal leadership to change names at the Registrar’s office is a criminal offense and it is currently in the High Court under cause number: 2016/HP/1144. The anomaly of holding an illegal convention has now been taken to the Supreme Court under Appeal number: SCZ/8/156/2016
These two actions mean that until these two cases are disposed of, there is no change in the leadership of the MMD.
Further, it is important to note that the MMD National Executive Committee which met on 14-15 May, 2016 at Ibis Gardens along Kabwe road, resolved to enter an electoral alliance with the UPND by a vote of 95%. To effect this alliance, on June 26th 2016, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the two parties at a special press conference in Lusaka addressed by the two Presidents Hakainde Hichilema and Nevers Mumba.
