SUSPECTED United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres yesterday beat up a police officer who was manning a roadblock near Moba Hotel in Kitwe.
The incident happened immediately after UPND vice-president for administration Geoffrey Mwamba was granted bail in a court case in which he faces four charges (see page three).
Copperbelt Police chief Charity Katanga said immediately after the court case, the cadres drove to Moba Hotel blocking the main road into and out of Kitwe.
Mrs Katanga said the police moved in to try and control the traffic jam, but they were attacked by the cadres. She said that in the process, three UPND cadres were injured and the police apprehended 12 of them but three of them escaped from “lawful custody” at Nkana East Police Post.
The cadres later pounced on the police officer who was manning a road block leaving him with injuries. – ZNBC
