TWENTY-TWO footballers have escaped death when a Rosa mini-bus they were travelling in overturned on the Mbala-Mpulungu road in Mpulungu district of Northern Province.
Both Mpulungu district commissioner Dennis Sikazwe and district hospital medical officer Philip Kashimu confirmed the accident to ZANIS yesterday.
Dr. Kashimu said the hospital received the 22 accident victims on Sunday night around 21:00 hrs.
He explained that out of the 22 people, 15 were discharged after undergoing medical check-ups while seven seriously injured ones had been referred to Mbala General Hospital for specialized treatment.
Dr. Kashimu, however, noted that all the accident victims were responding well to treatment and were in stable condition.
And one of the victims Moses Mwambazi explained from his hospital bed that all the victims were members of Mpulungu Harbour Corporation football team who were returning from a FAZ division one match in Kasama.
Mwambazi explained that on their way back, the Rosa bus they were travelling in lost control and overturned.
And Mpulungu district commissioner Dennis Sikazwe said the accident happened on Sunday night when the mini-bus which was carrying the soccer players careered off the road and overturned.
The bus was driven by Elvis Chakwa, 28, and was coming from Kasama where the team had gone to play.
Sikazwe said traffic accidents had increased on Zambian roads. Hence the need for motorists and traffic officers to work together to contain the situation.
