Police in Kitwe have arrested a couple found with Four hundred and Fifty bags of mealie meal which the two could not account for.
The couple’s consignment and a truck have since been impounded.
The two have been charged with failing to account for property suspected to have been stolen.
And Kitwe District Commissioner Chanda Kabwe says government is determined to rid the district off any cartels that are contributing to the high cost of Mealie Meal.
Mr. Kabwe said government is aware of some businessmen and women who are buying the commodity in bulk and later selling it at exorbitant prices.
He was speaking to ZNBC News after inspecting a truck laden with the four hundred and fifty bags of mealie meal.
But owner of the consignment Danny Silungwe said he owns a shop in Chililabombwe where they were taking the Mealie Meal.
Mr. Silungwe who displayed his trading license said the Mealie Meal was not meant for smuggling to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
