A heroic rescue operation by a team of Zambia Army Special Forces, Zambia Air Force (ZAF), Police and Department of National Parks and Wildlife yesterday prevented a pontoon ferrying five people and a minibus from plunging into a gorge at Sioma Ngwezi Falls.
This was after the pontoon developed a fault and got stuck at the Zambezi River cliff. The incident happened around 18:30 hours on Sunday after the vessel had docked while some people were disembarking and operators were offloading cargo.
The minibus, which was still on the vessel, could not be driven off because of the position of the trailer and the operators attempted to turn the pontoon to enable the driver of the bus to drive ashore.
