Former Ministry of Health Human Resources Officer, Henry Kapoko has appealed against the 2-year sentence slapped on him by the Lusaka Magistrate court on Monday.
Mr. Kapoko and his co-accused, Edwin Bushibantu , a Director of ESU Nursing School, has also applied for bail, pending an appeal hearing in the High Court.
In his appeal, Mr. Kapoko says the lower court erred, when it convicted him of receiving a bribe in the absence of evidence, to show that he solicited for the bribe.
He was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment by Lusaka Magistrate Lameck Ngambi on charges of abuse of authority of office.
Mr. Kapoko was also been asked to pay back 40-thousand kwacha, by Magistrate Ngambi.
And Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) has welcomed the sentencing of Mr. Kapoko to two years imprisonment by the Lusaka Magistrate court for abuse of authority of office.
TIZ Information Officer Charles Chulu says the sentencing of Mr. Kapoko will send strong self-control signals to would-be offenders.
Mr. Chulu added in a statement issued to ZNBC News that TIZ also hopes that the lesson of sentencing of Mr. Kapoko will compel public officers to refrain from engaging in criminal offences.
