A KITWE-based craft artist has been sentenced to 36 months imprisonment with hard labour for hacking three men with a machete.
In this case, Mwape Chilumba, 54 of 2838 Luangwa township, was charged with three counts of unlawful wounding.
In count one, it was alleged that Chilumba, on August 30, unlawfully wounded Emmanuel Yumba.
In count two, it is alleged that on August 30, Chilumba unlawfully wounded Cosmas Mulenga Sata.
In count three, it is alleged that Chilumba on the same date unlawfully wounded Afred Mulenga.
Chilumba denied assaulting the trio but said he was defending himself.
“When I remember that day, my heart bleeds; though I suffered the injuries I am ready to move on with life. In future, I will never, never use a machete in self-defence,” Chilumba said in mitigation.
But in his judgment, Kitwe senior resident magistrate Daniel Musonda said it was clear that the accused was not acting in self-defence.
“I will send you to prison for 36 months with hard labour effective your day of arrest,” ordered magistrate Musonda.
